Upon abandoning a documentary on Sri Lanka’s civil-war atrocities, filmmaker Yanyu Dong returns to her hometown of Qingdao on the cusp of the Lunar New Year. Filmed by her husband, Rajee Samarasinghe, Yanyu is at once herself and his refracted double, as their perspectives begin to blur and unsettle the edges of authorship and the observing self. Drifting through winter light, portraiture, coastal landscapes, and fragments of daily life, The Moment traces Qingdao’s layered seaside topography and the subtle frictions between tradition and modernization with a calm, dream-brushed cadence that at times echoes the contemplative rhythms of a Studio Ghibli reverie. Reconsidering documentary’s habits of looking, the film reflects on the fragile ethics of representation, in search of a form attuned to uncertainty and proximity. Emerging in the fraught aftermath of Samarasinghe’s first feature, Your Touch Makes Others Invisible, which reckoned with the legacy of Sri Lanka’s civil war, The Moment took shape gradually through an intuitive and improvised process in which each shot suggested the next, allowing the film to emerge from the act of filming itself. It stands both as a response to that earlier work and as an attempt to move beyond it.
